Decline in State University Enrollments: NITI Aayog Report

Mukherjee Mita
A recent NITI Aayog report on the condition of higher education in India found that enrollment in undergraduate programs at state universities fell by 9% between 2016–17 and 2021–2022.

The research ascribed the decrease to changing employment landscapes and students' growing propensity to choose other career and vocational alternatives.

Between 2011–12 and 2016–17, undergraduate enrollments grew at a strong rate of 22%; however, for the next five years, from 2016–17 to 2021–22, this pace slowed to 13%. According to the research, "this slowdown may be attributed to changing employment landscapes, increased access to alternative career paths, and vocational training opportunities."
